Development updates, pixel art tutorials, and behind-the-scenes insights

Performance, Polish, and What's Next

July 14, 2026

Hey panners! It's time for another development update.

Over the past few months I've been focusing on improving the foundation of PAN rather than adding flashy new features. A lot of this work happened behind the scenes, but it should make the entire site feel much smoother to use.

The biggest improvement is to the canvas itself. Drawing on larger canvases is now much more efficient than before, and you should notice significantly less lag while working on bigger projects. This was one of the most common issues people reported, so I'm happy to finally have a solid solution in place.

I've also spent time tracking down a number of long-standing bugs. Tools that previously behaved strangely, like the marquee tool and some of the special brush tools, have been fixed and should now operate as expected. There were quite a few smaller fixes throughout the editor as well, all aimed at making the drawing experience feel more reliable and consistent.

Outside of the editor, I've been working on the site's infrastructure. The account system has received several security improvements, and a lot of the site's internal systems are now much better integrated with one another. While these aren't changes you'll necessarily see, they lay important groundwork for everything coming next.

Speaking of what's next... the community gallery is finally the primary focus.

This is still going to be a very large project. Building the gallery requires major changes to the site's database infrastructure, intricate notification and update systems, user interactions, moderation tools, and a lot of other backend work before everything comes together. It's easily the biggest feature PAN has tackled so far, but now that the editor and site foundation are in a much stronger place, I can devote my attention to making it happen.

As always, thank you all for your patience, feedback, and support. Every bug report and suggestion helps improve PAN, and I'm excited to finally begin tackling the feature that so many of you have been waiting for.

I'll have more to share soon!

Exciting Updates Coming Soon!

January 9, 2026

Hello panners! I'm excited to share some news with you.

As of the last few months, I have been unable to work on PAN development due to personal reasons. However, I am happy to announce that I will be able to devote more time to development moving forward!

While I have many new features planned, I will be starting with a few bug fixes and quality of life improvements, for instance, many of you might have noticed the lag when drawing on large canvases. This is due to the browser having to render a lot of pixels at once. I am working on a solution to this problem, which will be implemented in the next update.

Some other issues include style and UI issues being inconsistent across pages. I am working on a solution to this problem as well, and you should see a much more consistent look and feel across the site in the next update.

Besides that, big next steps include an animation studio, and a community gallery. I am also working on a few other features, but I will keep those a surprise for now!

I know alot of people have been impatient and wondering when the gallery will be implemented, and I am sorry for the wait. I have been working on the backend for the gallery for a while now, and I am finally at a point where I can start working on the frontend. I hope to have a basic version of the gallery up and running within the next few months.

Thank you for your patience and support, and I hope to see you all soon!

How I Started Off

June 10, 2025

I started with a blank 64x64 canvas with a measly toolbar and just let my mind wander...

Eventually, I landed on this advanced UI you see now. Here's what I learned.

The process began with sketching out a basic layout in my mind. I wanted something that felt both modern and nostalgic, capturing the essence of classic pixel art while being functional for today's users.

One of the biggest challenges was making sure the interface scaled properly across different screen sizes while maintaining it's aesthetic. I ended up creating multiple versions of each UI element at different resolutions.

The color picker took a very long time to get right, and it still isn't perfect. I went through a couple iterations before picking the version you see today on the canvas page. That darn off-color eyedropper tool preset is still giving me trouble.

I'm still learning as I go, and I'm always open to feedback and suggestions. If you have any ideas for future blog posts, feel free to reach out!
